A number of seed treatment options are available to New Zealand pastoral farmers.
Seed treatments offer a number of benefits including protecting the young seedlings from various fungal diseases and insect attack. In certain products they also provide localised nutrients (e.g. lime and molybdenum) and in the case of clover and lucerne some products also include rhizobia to aid plant establishment.
The table below allows for a quick comparison between the commercially available seed treatment products.
The Farmlands Seed mixing site in Christchurch can treat grass and brassica seed with Gaucho and Poncho (insecticidal seed treatments from Bayer CropScience). The seed treatments Superstrike, Ultrastrike and Prillcote are manufactured and applied by Coated Seeds.
